The National Testing Agency (NTA) has recently issued a detailed clarification regarding the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 results. Concerns had been raised over the unusually high cut-off marks and the unprecedented number of toppers. The NTA’s statement, released on Thursday, aims to address these concerns and assure the public about the integrity of the examination process.

The Competitive Nature of NEET-UG

In its statement, the NTA emphasized that the increase in cut-off marks and the number of top scorers reflect the highly competitive nature of the NEET-UG exam. The NTA maintained that the integrity of the exam has not been compromised and that the high scores are a result of the rigorous preparation and performance of the candidates.

Reasons Behind High Scores

The NTA explained that several factors contributed to the high scores this year. One significant factor was the changes made in the NCERT textbooks, which are a primary source of study material for NEET aspirants. These changes made the content more aligned with the examination requirements, leading to better preparation and higher scores.

Another critical factor was the awarding of grace marks. The NTA acknowledged that some candidates were given compensatory marks due to disruptions during the exam. These disruptions included technical glitches and loss of time at certain examination centers. To ensure fairness, the NTA awarded compensatory marks to affected candidates, which contributed to their high scores.

Clarification on Toppers

A significant point of contention was the fact that 67 candidates scored a perfect 720 out of 720 marks, resulting in a shared top rank. The NTA clarified that out of these 67 candidates, 44 achieved perfect scores due to a revision in the answer key for one of the Physics questions. Additionally, six candidates received compensatory marks, which contributed to their perfect scores.

The NTA also addressed allegations that many toppers were from the same examination center in Haryana. They categorically denied these allegations, stating that the toppers come from various parts of the country, reflecting the widespread talent and hard work of NEET aspirants across India.

Increase in Number of Candidates

The NTA highlighted that the number of candidates appearing for NEET-UG has significantly increased over the years. In 2023, 20,38,596 candidates appeared for the exam, whereas in 2024, this number rose to 23,33,297. This increase naturally led to a larger pool of high scorers, which explains the higher cut-off marks and the increased number of toppers.

Addressing Allegations of Irregularities

In response to the allegations of irregularities and a purported question paper leak, the NTA firmly stated that these claims are baseless. They assured that every question paper had been accounted for and that there was no leak. The NTA reiterated that the examination process was conducted with the utmost transparency and fairness.

Grace Marks and Compensatory Measures

The NTA further elaborated on the issue of grace marks. They explained that several candidates had filed petitions regarding the loss of examination time due to disruptions at some centers. After thorough verification, the NTA awarded compensatory marks to 1,563 candidates. The revised scores for these candidates ranged from -20 to 720 marks, ensuring that they were not disadvantaged due to circumstances beyond their control.
