Location – Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.

Working for Research and Innovation
Future Energy Systems (FES) was launched in 2016 with $75 million from the Government of Canada’s Canada First Research Excellence fund, to help Canada transition to a low net-carbon energy economy. The program supports more than 100 projects, more than 150 researchers, and over 1,000 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other highly qualified personnel whose interdisciplinary work develops the energy technologies of the near future, integrates them into today’s infrastructure, and examines possible consequences for our society, economy, and environment. The program’s research also contributes to the development of solutions for challenges presented by current energy systems. As part of its mandate, FES trains graduate students in science communications, and operates a robust outreach and engagement program with the goal of sharing the latest research findings with members of the public through partnerships with science centres, libraries, and schools.
Working as an Educational Programming Assistant
Reporting to the Outreach and Engagement Lead, this position supports work with UAlberta units, external partners and researchers to develop and execute outreach and engagement activities on campus and in external venues such as schools, libraries, and science centres. The position supports development and implementation of engagement initiatives and assists in monitoring impacts of programming. The position supports outreach and engagement training for energy systems research personnel, including the Energy Explorers training program. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to rapidly digest, analyze and communicate information related to energy. The position requires occasional travel within the Edmonton area, strong skills in public speaking, and a passion for engagement with public audiences. Demonstrated teaching skills are an asset.
Duties
Support the development of programming for teachers and schools, including the creation of resources such as lesson plans, hands-on activities, and videos (including editing)
Host classroom learning sessions as directed by Outreach and Engagement Lead
Assist with event planning for outreach programming, including campus tours, public events, school programming, etc.
Assist with the management of the outreach resources webpage
Qualifications
Post-secondary diploma; undergraduate degree preferred in related field including science, engineering, education, etc.
Demonstrated experience with developing and delivering education sessions and materials
Experience communicating complex ideas to various audiences in an engaging manner
Proficiency with Google Suite
Proven comfort with public speaking, including speaking on camera
Demonstrated ability to adapt and pivot to rapidly changing demands
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while managing competing priorities
Experience with Alberta education curriculum is strongly preferred
A valid driver’s license is an asset
Familiarity with topics in energy, environment, climate change, etc. an asset
